Progress in drone warfare: Russia’s Piranya UAV and Ukraine’s countermeasures


In March 2023, the Russian military operation zone witnessed the unveiling of the Piranya unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), marking a significant development in drone warfare. Since its introduction, over 4,000 Piranya drones have been delivered to the special military operation zone, showcasing the rapid deployment and integration of these UAVs into combat operations. The Piranya UAV, developed by Simbirsk Design Bureau in Ulyanovsk, Russia, represents a notable advancement in drone technology, featuring first-person view (FPV) capabilities that allow operators to receive a live video feed, enhancing operational effectiveness and precision.

The Piranya UAV stands out for its unique electronic warfare resistance, operating on frequencies that have shown resilience against electronic warfare attempts to suppress it. This capability was confirmed during tests conducted by the Russian Ministry of Defense in Lugansk, where Piranya’s video transmitters were able to withstand electronic countermeasures effectively. This resilience to electronic warfare highlights the Piranya’s strategic value in modern combat, where electronic dominance is increasingly crucial.

With a design focused on versatility and efficiency, the Piranya drone is made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, offering a balance of durability and lightweight construction. It boasts a range of up to 15 km and a carrying capacity of up to 4.5 kg, making it suitable for a variety of missions, including the destruction of light and armored vehicles, as well as fortifications. This capability was notably demonstrated in the destruction of Ukraine’s first US-made M1 Abrams tank, underscoring the UAV’s potential in changing the dynamics of ground engagements.

However, the operational environment for UAVs like Piranya is continuously evolving, with countermeasures and electronic warfare systems being developed to mitigate their effectiveness. In response to the growing threat posed by drones, Ukraine has developed the Piranha AVD 360, an electronic warfare (EW) system designed to counter hostile UAV operations. Announced by Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the Piranha AVD 360 aims to protect armored vehicles and soldiers from drone threats by creating a defense perimeter that disrupts drone operations within a 600-meter radius. This system can interfere with drone command and data transmission signals, as well as satellite navigation systems, including Russia’s GLONASS, indicating a strategic countermeasure against drone warfare advancements​​​​​​.

The introduction of the Piranya UAV and countermeasures like the Piranha AVD 360 electronic warfare system reflect the ongoing technological arms race in modern warfare. These developments underscore the increasing importance of UAVs and EW systems in achieving operational superiority and the continuous efforts by military forces to enhance their capabilities in response to evolving threats. The effectiveness of these systems in actual combat scenarios remains a critical area of focus, as both sides seek to leverage technology to gain strategic advantages in the conflict.
