The rise in pediatric COVID-19 cases has prompted the American Academy of Pediatrics to issue a report and a formal statement warning of the escalating situation.
According to the report, more than 30,000 child COVID-19 cases were reported in the last week. This marks the second consecutive weekly increase of reported child cases, up from the 23,000 cases reported the week ending October 20th.
As of November 3rd, over 14.9 million children are reported to have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic according to available state reports. Nearly 105,000 of these cases have been added in the past 4 weeks. This week almost 30,000 child COVID-19 cases were reported. This marks the second consecutive weekly increase of reported child cases, up from the 23,000 cases reported the week ending October 20th.
The age distribution of reported COVID-19 cases was provided on the health department websites of reporting states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Since the pandemic began, children represented 18.3% of total cumulated cases.
For the current week ending November 3rd, this portion of reported cases that were children was 13.2% (children, under age 18, make up 22.2% of the US population). Reported cases are likely a substantial undercount of COVID-19 cases among children.
There is a need to collect more age-specific data to assess the severity of illness related to new variants as well as potential longer-term effects. It is important to recognize there are immediate effects of the pandemic on children’s health, but importantly we need to identify and address the long-lasting impacts on the physical, mental, and social well-being of this generation of children and youth.
